NORFOLK, VA—The ODU Monarchs (21-14/9-7) scored four runs in the eighth to break a 3-3 tie and defeated East Carolina (20-14/8-5), 7-3 in a C-USA contest Friday evening before the second largest crowd at the Bud Metheny Complex of 1,751. The all-time largest crowd at the stadium was 2,125 on April 25th, 1984 against Virginia Tech which was the stadium dedication night.
With the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the eight, PJ Higgins led off with a single, followed by a single from Josh Eldridge. Josiah Burney then doubled down the rightfield line, bringing home Eldridge and Higgins to make it 5-3. Taylor ostrich tripled to centerfield to plate Burney and catcher Chris Livers singled home Ostrich to complete the scoring and give ODU a 7-3 lead.
Senior reliever Brad Gero pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out two batters to end the contest and Conner Overton picked up his first win of the season after pitching a scoreless eighth inning.
ODU pounded out 13 hits on the night as Higgins and Burney each had three hits and Ben Slaton added two hits. ECU had eight hits led by Dylan Brown and Zach Houchins with two each.
ODU took an early 2-0 lead when Ben Slaton’s sacrifice fly RBI plated Tyler Urps in the third inning and in the fourth Josiah Burney tripled with one out, then scored on a passed ball. ECU came back, scoring a run in the fifth on a solo homer by Luke Lowery and then tied the contest on a sacrifice fly RBI by a Townsend in the sixth.
ODU went back up 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth on a PJ Higgins single which brought home Ben Slaton, but ECU tied it again in the seventh on an RBI single by Hunter Allen.
The two teams play game two of the series on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. following a big day at ODU beginning at 10 am with the Big Blue 5K, then the Big Blue BBQ at 12 noon and the ODU Spring Football game at 3 p.m.
