Virginia Tech Edges Old Dominion 18-17

NORFOLK, Va. - Junior midfielder Christina Rea and senior attacker Emily Austerberry combined for nine goals but ODU fell 18-17 to the Virginia Tech Hokies on Senior Day.

On a very rainy and muggy senior day ODU (3-8) trailed 5-1 early but came back with a comeback effort led by Rea who scored five goals on the day and Austerberry who tallied four goals in the game. 

Virginia Tech led 5-1, when ODU's junior midfielder Rea tallied her 16th on the season and Austerberry scored her 23rd goal of the year to cut the Tech lead to 5-3. 

ODU junior Ashmore Standing and Lady Monarchs sophomore midfielder Mary McCaleb each scored the next two goals as ODU trailed 6-5. 

The Hokies scored the next three of four to retake a three-goal 9-6 lead. Rea tallied three consecutive goals eight minutes a part as ODU trailed 10-8 with 3 minutes left in the first half. 

Austerberry put a goal in the back of the net with one minute left off a free position shot to pull the Lady Monarchs within two. Junior attacker Jessica Liberty scored with just 11 seconds left with an assist going to freshman Connor Carson to send the score at 11-10 at halftime.

ODU began the second half with a goal scored by Emily Austerberry. Rea tied the game with her 20th goal of the year, however Virginia Tech would retake the 14-12 lead with two goals from Julia Heaps and Jack Boissonneault. 

Old Dominion's McCaleb scored her second of the game to cut the lead to 14-13. Standing and Austerberry added the next three as ODU tied the game at 16-16.

Both teams would trade goals as ODU's Carson added her 9th of the year and tied the game at 17-17. Virginia Tech managed one final tally as Cawley Bromley scored the game-winner for Virginia Tech to take the 18-17 win.
