NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University men’s tennis team swept the Hampton University Pirates 7-0 at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on Friday afternoon. Old Dominion improves to 8-3 while Hampton losses its fourth match in a row, dropping to 2-4.
Old Dominion took an early lead winning the doubles point and never looked back after that. The duo of Koen Wiggemans and Darragh Glavin earned their second win of the season against Aleksandre Davilianidze and Lakshmana Satchithananthan (8-3) of Hampton. Also the team of Zvonimir Podvinski and Abdoulaye Camara got their first win in their only doubles match together facing Joshua McQueen and Henry Drakeford (8-1). Carlos Lopez-Villa and Jonas Kuwert were winning their match as well, but it was shortened because of the clinch rule.
In singles, every Monarch won their match in convincing fashion. No. 56 Lopez Villa made quick work of his opponent Advait Kirtane (6-0, 6-1), as he extends his record this season to 11-0 and his winning streak to 18 matches, dating all the way back to last season on March 11, 2013.
Kuwert of Old Dominion won his seventh match of the season against Aleksandre Davianidze (6-1, 6-0). Also winning in straight sets was Podvinski, who did not drop a game in his second set to finish off Miguel Suarez (6-2, 6-0) from Hampton. Old Dominion’s two walk-ons Abdoulaye Camara and Daniel Abegg both won their matches against Joshua McQueen (6-1,7-5) and Henry Drakeford (6-2,6-3), respectively. Koen Wiggemans also added a win against Lakshmana Satchithananthan (6-0, 6-2).

Next Up for the Tennis Monarchs
The Monarchs will be right back in action on Sunday Mar. 2 against Yale at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center at Yale University in New Haven Conn. at 2:00 p.m.
About the Yale Bulldogs (3-2) – Sunday, March 2 at 2:00 p.m. in New Haven Conn.
In the previous five ITA national team rankings, Yale has been ranked (as high as No. 58 in the country); however, this is the first week in which the Bulldogs do not find themselves nationally ranked. With that said, Yale’s only two losses came at the hands of two top programs in No. 44 Virginia Tech and No. 53 East Tennessee State. Sunday’s match will take place at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center and will be the Bulldogs’ fourth consecutive home match. Yale is led by their fabulous freshman Tyler Lu (Irvine, Cali.), who has played at the No. 1 singles spot throughout the season.
Alex Dorato is in the midst of his 22nd season at the helm of the Yale men’s tennis program. Last season his team posted an 18-6 record, finished 4th in the Ivy League, and ended with a national ranking of 56.
