Kelley Becomes First Basketball Player in School’s History to Garner ?C-USA Player of the Week’ Honors
On December 9, 2013, Old Dominion University’s junior forward Shae Kelley was named C-USA Player of the Week. For the two games that week, Shae averaged 25 points, 14.5 rebounds, four assists, three steals and 1.5 blocked shots per game and shot an average of 56.4% from the floor.
Former CAA Rookie of the Year, Ashley Betz-White Will Redshirt 2013-14 Season
On January 29th, Old Dominion University women’s basketball head coach, Karen Barefoot announced that the Lady Monarch’s all-conference junior guard, Ashley Betz-White, will redshirt this season due to bilateral stress fractures in her lower legs.
Lady Monarch’s 2013-14 Education Day
The women’s basketball team had 8,086 elementary school children at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on Dec. 4, 2013 for its third annual Education Day Game with the Norfolk Public Schools. The game marked the Lady Monarchs’ highest attended game since the Ted opened in 2002.
FIU’s COACHING STAFF’s CONNECTION TO OLD DOMINION
Head Coach ? Cindy Russo
Cindy Russo began coaching at her alma mater, Old Dominion, as an assistant coach following a successful collegiate career. She spent two years assisting at ODU before taking the head coaching position at FIU as a graduate assistant for the 1977-78 season.
Cindy Russo is now in her 38th year as the head coach of FIU women’s basketball. Over that time, she has guided FIU to 22-consecutive winning seasons (1981-2003) and six NCAA Division I Tournament berths.
Associate Head Coach ? Inge Nissen
In 1976, Russo ? a former assistant coach at Old Dominion University ? recruited Nissen to ODU. Nissen helped the Lady Monarchs to a top-15 national ranking in each of her four years. She led Old Dominion to the WNIT Championship in 1978 as the team finished the season ranked No. 12 in the final Associated Press rankings.
Nissen then capped her collegiate career by leading the Lady Monarchs to AIAW National Championships in 1979 and 1980. From 1976-80, Kodak, WNIT and the National Scouting Association honored Nissen as an All-American, and she was the team's MVP during the 1978, 1979 and 1980 seasons, as well as the Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year in 1980.
Nissen finished her career as the school's all-time leader in points (2,647) and rebounds (1,459) ? marks that rank second in the ODU record book today. Her single-game career high of 28 rebounds remains a school record, as does her 148 free throws made in a single season and her 518 career made free throws. Twice, she scored more than 40 points in a game, and her 20 field goals made during the WNIT remains a tournament record. Eight times as a collegian, Nissen scored 32 points or more in a game, five of those times coming in the postseason.
In 1985, Nissen was inducted into the Old Dominion Hall of Fame, and her jersey, No. 42, is one of only five numbers to be retired by ODU. She was selected to ODU's All-Time Lady Monarch squad, as voted by fans on the University's athletic website, in 2006. Nissen was also honored as one of ESPN.com's top-25 players of the pre-NCAA era for her accomplishments with the Lady Monarchs.
Nissen received her bachelor's degree in French literature from Old Dominion in 1990.
The 2013-14 Florida International Panthers (12-15, 6-8)
Senior guard Jerica Coley is the second leading scorer in the country (only behind Baylor’s Odyssey Sims) with 29.6 points per game to go along with her 4.1 assists per contest. Sophomore guard Taylor Shade averages 9.1 points per game while junior forward Tynia McKinzie contributes 8.9 points per game and leads the team with 7.1 rebounds per game.
The Panthers are 9th in Conference USA averaging 68.1 points per game, while they are also second in the league in free throw percentage (.755). Florida International is seventh in the league in rebound margin and fourth in blocked shots per game (4.07). FIU is second last in the conference in field goal percentage defense allowing 43 percent from the floor.
