DeLand, Fla. - Lady Monarchs senior Emily Austerberry scored three goals to lead the ODU lacrosse team (1-2) to a 15-11 win against Stetson on Thursday evening.
"Today was an amazing team effort," said ODU Head Coach Heather Holt. "Everyone on our team played and contributed throughout the whole game. A win like this really boosts the morale and confidence of the team as a whole and as individual players. It was a great day for ODU Lacrosse!"
ODU scored the first five goals of the game, coming from redshirt sophomore Morgan Gallagher, junior Jessica Liberty, freshman Megan Topper, junior Christina Rea and one more from Liberty, which gave ODU a 5-0 lead.
Stetson would take the next three until junior midfielder Ashmore Standing scored her second of the season to give the Lady Monarchs a 6-3 lead.
Austerberry would score three goals along with Topper and freshman Morgan Marrale scoring before the end of the first half to give ODU an 11-5 lead into the break.
The second half began with Gallagher scoring her second of the game and sophomore Mary McCaleb scoring her fourth and fifth goals of the season to give ODU a 14-5 lead.
Old Dominion's Standing would add one more goal before the end of the game to help clinch the victory.
The Lady Monarchs outshot the Hatters by a 30-24 edge, however Stetson took 15 of the 26 draw controls. ODU won the ground ball battle by a 24-16 advantage and were able to clear 14 of their 15 attempts.
Junior goalkeeper Karen Hayde picks up her first win of the season. Hayde made four saves on the night as freshman Maggie Buckley also made five saves for ODU.
Austerberry led ODU with six shots and three draw controls. Rea and McCaleb each tallied five and four shots respectively.
