VCU Rallies to Beat Monarchs, 6-3

ATLANTA, Ga. - Old Dominion University baseball held a 2-1 after six innings but VCU scored three runs in the seventh and hung on for a 6-3 win over the Monarchs Saturday afternoon at Georgia Tech.

ODU got on the board with two runs in the first as Jordan Negrini drilled a two-run single to left to score Connor Myers and Taylor Ostrich, who had both singled, for a 2-0 ODU lead.

The lead held until the Rams got on the board with an unearned run in the sixth to make the score 2-1.

VCU again took advantage of ODU errors, as Bill Cullen started the seventh by reaching on an error, and after two quick outs, scored on a double by Matt David to tie the score at two.  After a walk to Cody Acker, James Bunn singled home Davis and Acker scored from first on another Monarch error to make the score 4-2.

Old Dominion got a run back in the eighth on an RBI single from Josh Eldridge to score Myers, but VCU responded with two runs in the bottom of the eighth for insurance.

Myers led the way for ODU with a 3-for-4 day at the plate and two runs scored, while Negrini plated a pair of runs.  Davidson went 4-for-4 for the Rams while Bunn added a pair of hits.

Sophomore Tommy Alexander started for ODU, going five innings, allowing five hits and one unearned run.  Brad Gero suffered the loss going 1.2 innings, allowing a hit and two runs, one earned.

Seth Greene started and went six innings for VCU, allowed five hits and two runs.  Logan Kanuik pitched a scoreless inning for the win, while Matt Lees pitched the final two to earn the save.
