Norfolk, Va. – The Lady Monarchs captured their fourth win of the season on Saturday, at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis center after defeating the West Virginia Mountaineers, 6-1. The Lady Monarchs bounced back after their tough loss to Maryland, to improve to 4-2, while the Mountaineers fall to 1-4 on the season.
The Lady Monarchs got another win from their freshmen tandem of Ingrid Vojcinakova and Marijana Novakovic, as they defeated West Virginia’s No. 2 doubles team Vivian Tsui and Ikttesh Chahal (8-1). Old Dominion clinched the doubles point with a default win by Faith Atiso and Nika Khomolovska.
In singles, Old Dominion was truly dominant, only giving up one match today. An early victory by Nika Khomolovska over Vivian Tsui (6-0, 6-0), in which she did not give up a game, set the tone for the rest of the match. The Lady Monarchs were led by Nikol Hristova who had a come from behind victory to defeat West Virginia’s No. 1 Kaja Mrgole (4-6, 6-0, (10-7)). Marijana Novakovic captured her second win of the season over Irinka Toidze (6-2, 6-1). Her freshman counterpart Ingrid Vojcinakova picked up her fourth win of the season, defeating Ikttesh Chahal (6-0, 6-3). Melissa Esnal Olguin also picked up a win by default.
“We’re right about where we want to be at this point in the season. The loss to Maryland last weekend really fueled the fire for our girls today. I feel like that’s the reason we won in such a dominant fashion.”
Next up for the Lady Monarchs:
The Lady Monarchs will square up against the Retrievers of UMBC on Friday February 21 and will have another home match against the Spiders of Richmond the following Saturday on March 1.
