Barefoot Claims Win No. 250 in ODU's Comeback OT Thriller Over Marshall, 65-52

NORFOLK, Va. – Karen Barefoot earned her 250th career win when the Old Dominion University women’s basketball team scored 10 consecutive points at the end of regulation to force overtime and then the first nine points in OT to pull off the come from behind victory over Marshall, 65-52, on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 2,740 at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

With 6:19 to play in the first half, the Thundering Herd (7-13, 0-7) led Old Dominion (10-12, 3-5) by 14 points, which ended up being the biggest lead of the game. After trailing 29-17 at halftime, the Lady Monarchs started the second half on a 5-1 run, forcing a Thundering Herd timeout.

Shae Kelley’s first field goal of the ballgame game came at the 13:35 mark of the second half, keeping Old Dominion within 10 points. With 4:52 to play in the contest, Marshall still held a 48-38 advantage. In the last 3:50 of regulation, the Lady Monarchs would use a 10-0 run to capped off by a deep Shae Kelley three-pointer to tie the contest at 48-48 with just 23.8 remaining in regulation. On the ensuing possession, ODU would stop Marshall and force overtime.

In overtime, Galaisha Goodhope drilled a three, which was followed by layups from Tiffany Minor, Becca Allison and Shae Kelley, this led to Old Dominion scoring the first nine points of overtime, which ultimately spurred ODU to victory by their largest lead of the game, 13.

Old Dominion’s junior co-captain, Kelley, ended the contest with 24 points, 17 rebounds (ties career high), three assists and two steals. Tiffany Minor hauled down a new career high nine rebounds to compliment her 10 points, while teammate Chelisa Painter also netted double-figures, going for 10 points and five rebounds on the night.

Leading the way for the Herd, was Aja Sorrells’ 13 points and nine rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for Marshall were Chukwuka Ezeigbo (11 points) and A.J. Johnson (10 points).

The Lady Monarchs used a blistering 77% (7-9) shooting from the floor in overtime to surge past the Thundering Herd. For the game, ODU shot 38.6% (22-57) from the floor, 31.6% (6-19) from three and 60% (15-25) from the charity stripe. Marshall hit on 37.5% (21-56) of their field-goal attempts, 26.3% (5-19) from downtown and 35.7% (5-14) from the FT line.

First Half Notes
The Thundering Herd came out of the gates quickly and jumped out to an early 8-3 lead by the first media timeout. Marshall extended their lead to 21-8 with 7:47 remaining in the opening half.

At the last final media timeout (3:36) Marshall held a 25-13 advantage over the Lady Monarchs. The Herd would lead by a score of 29-17 at halftime, behind 10 points and seven rebounds from Aja Sorrells. Leading the way ODU was LaQuanda Younger who went 2-2 from the floor, scoring six points off the bench.

For the half, Marshall shot 25.5% (11-31) from the floor, 30.8% (4-13) from three and 50% (3-6) from the free-throw line. Old Dominion hit 25% (5-20) of their shot attempts, 33.3% (3-9) from downtown and 40% (4-10) from the charity stripe.

The Old Dominion women’s basketball team will remain at home for their next contest on Wednesday, February 5, against Tulsa at 7:00 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
