Norfolk, Va. – Four matches into the season, the Old Dominion University tennis team carries a 4-0 overall record after picking up two more victories on Sunday against Norfolk State (6-1) and Morgan State (7-0) on Sunday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
Norfolk State vs. Old Dominion Recap
In singles, the Tennis Monarchs only gave up three sets to the Norfolk State Spartans. No. 30 Carlos Lopez-Villa defeated Dzmitry Zyhmantovich (6-4, 6-2) in straight sets. Jonas Kuwert made quick work of Peter Ramstromer-Pello, only giving up three games in the match (6-1, 6-2). Dante Terenzio scratched and clawed against Robin Reithmueller (6-1, 6-5(7-3)), to earn his win with a second set tiebreaker to clinch a point for the Monarchs. Darragh Glavin came from behind to come out victorious, after losing the first set to Daniel Grauel of Norfolk State (2-6, 6-1, 6-3). Zvonimir Podvinski also got ODU a point for defeating Igor Braga in straight sets (6-3, 6-2).
In doubles it was more of the same for the Monarchs, with Carlos Lopez-Villa and Darragh Glavin only dropping one game to Dzmitry Zyhmantovich and Peter Ramstomer-Pello of Norfolk State (6-1). Also Dante Terenzio and Zvonimir Podvinski combined for the win against NSU’s Daniel Grauel and Kent Austin to capture the doubles point for the Old Dominion.
Morgan State vs. Old Dominion Recap
The Monarchs improved to 4-0 on the season with today’s win over the Morgan State Bears. No. 30 Carlos Lopez-Villa did not give up a game to Morgan State’s Duk Young-Park (6-0, 6-0) and still has not dropped a set all season. Dante Terenzio was in another close second set with Evan Ward (6-1, 6-5(7-3)), but eventually pulled out the win for the Monarchs. Jonas Kuwert defeated Josh Abraham (6-1, 6-2) in straight sets, only giving up three games total. Zvonimir Podvinski also made quick work of Ty Abraham (6-1, 6-2), also only giving up three games. Old Dominion stayed undefeated for the match with another win by Darragh Glavin over Jannick Tash (6-1, 6-2). Rounding out the Monarchs plethora of wins today was walk-on Daniel Abegg, who captured his first victory in a third set tiebreaker against Morgan State’s Dmitriy Borodkin (6-3, 4-6, (10-6)).
In doubles it was much of the same domination for ODU, as won all three matches. The tandem of Carlos Lopez-Villa and Darragh Glavin defeated Jannick Tash and Evan Ward(6-2). Also contributing to the monarch’s success were Dante Terenzio and Zvonimir Podvinski, who handled Duk Young-Park and Dmitriy Borodkin (6-1). Jonas Kuwert and Koen Wiggemans also picked up a win in doubles versus Ty and Josh Abraham (6-1).

Next Up for the Tennis Monarchs
The Old Dominion University men’s tennis team and their undefeated record will remain at home next weekend for two matches at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. On Saturday, February 1, ODU will duke it out with the Ivy League’s Princeton Tigers at 1:00 p.m. On Sunday, February 2, the Monarchs will square off against the Retrievers from UMBC at 11:00 a.m.
