NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University men’s tennis team moved to 2-0 for the spring season after handling the Spiders from the University of Richmond, 5-2, on Saturday morning at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. U of R falls to 1-2 on the season.

Carlos Lopez-Villa and Darragh Glavin made quick work of UR’s Alex Hahn and Dylan Trent (6-1). Also picking up a doubles win for the Monarchs was the tandem of Dante Terenzio and Zvonimir Podvinski, who solidified the sole team point in doubles for Old Dominion.

In singles play, four of ODU’s six players claimed victory on Saturday. No. 30 Carlos Lopez-Villa won in straight sets with a second set tiebreaker against Richmond’s No. 1 Ethan Dunbar (6-2, 6-5(7-5)). Zvonimir Podvinski also won in straight sets with a second set tiebreaker against the Spider’s Alex Hahn (6-1, 6-5(7-5). Jonas Kuwert had a huge come from behind victory to defeat Dylan Trent (6-1, 3-6, 5-6(7-5)). Koen Wiggemans locked up the last point for the Monarchs in straight sets against Jonathan Quenard (6-3, 6-4).

In doubles the Monarchs clinched the point with Carlos Lopez-Villa and Darragh Glavin defeating Alex Hahn and Dylan Trent (6-1) along with Dante Terenzio and Zvonimir Podvinski defeating  Jonathan Quenard and Dylan Trent (6-3).

Next Up for the Monarchs
Old Dominion will quickly return to action tomorrow, January 26, at the Folkes Stevens Tennis Center for two matches against Norfolk State at 9:00 a.m. and Morgan State at 2:30 p.m.

Norfolk State Spartans – Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
Nate Feldman, the reigning MEAC Tennis Coach of the Year, led his Spartans to a 12-8 overall record last year. For the first time in school history, NSU won a share of the regular season title last season, where they eventually lost in the semi-finals of the MEAC Tournament. Igor Braga, a junior from Brazil, was named to the ITA All-Academic Team in 2013.

Norfolk State was picked to finish No. 2 in the MEAC Preseason Poll. So far this season, NSU has lost to William and Mary, 5-2. Robin Riethmueller competed at the No. 2 singles position for the Spartans and posted a 3-6, 6-5(3), 1-0 (10-4) victory over W&M’s Will Juggins. In the No. 6 spot, NSU’s Daniel Grauel defeated Scott Huang 4-6, 6-5, 1-0 (10-7).

Morgan State Bears – Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Last season, the Bears won their first MEAC divisional title after posting an undefeated conference record (4-0) and going 5-17 overall. Duk Young-Park, who was a first-team All-MEAC selection last season, finished the regular season with a team-best 7-3 record at No. 1 singles, and went 10-9 overall. Morgan State went 13-4 in doubles record last season, before being upset by Bethune-Cookman in the first round of the MEAC Tournament.
