Lady Monarchs Dominate FAU on Alumni Night, 80-44

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team handled Florida Atlantic University, 80-44, on Saturday at the Ted Constant Center on Alumni Night. With the win, the Lady Monarchs advance to 9-9 overall and 2-2 in the conference, while FAU falls to 11-6 overall and 1-3 in Conference USA.

The Lady Monarchs would close the opening half on a 12-3 run, taking a 36-24 lead into the locker room. Old Dominion then came out of the gates on a 26-5 run to start the second half, stretching the advantage to 51-29 with 14:22 remaining in regulation, before running away to victory with their largest lead of the ballgame, 36 points.

Shae Kelley recorded double-double No. 12 of the season, which leads Old Dominion, as she posted 20 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. Chelisa Painter followed up her career-high performance against Southern Miss. with a 16-point and nine rebound outing on Saturday night. Becca Allison also scored in double-figures (10 points) and also hauled down four rebounds.

Tiffany Minor went for nine points, four rebounds and five assists, while teammate Galaisha Goodhope scored seven points, grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and also dished out five assists.

Leading the way for the Owls, were Shaneese Bailey (four rebounds and four steals) and Kimberly Smith (six rebounds), who each scored nine points. Shanequa Schrouder scored eight points to go along with her three rebounds.

For the game, Old Dominion shot 49.2% (30-61) from the field, 42.9% (6-14) from three and 63.6% (14-22) from the free-throw line. Florida Atlantic was held to 28.1% (18-64) shooting form the floor, 9.4% (3-32) from downtown and 55.6% (5-9) from the charity stripe.

The Lady Monarchs held advantages in rebounds (55-32), assists (22-9), points in the paint (40-18), second chance points (23-9) and bench points (26-18).

First Half Notes
A Galaisha Goodhope three-pointer with 12:52 showing on the clock forced Florida Atlantic to call a timeout after the Lady Monarchs stretched their lead to 20-11.

The Owls would go on an 8-0 run to cut their deficit down to 21-19 before Old Dominion’s Shae Kelley made a layup and got fouled to stop the bleeding, giving ODU a 24-21 advantage at the under-eight media timeout.

Old Dominion finished the half strong and led Florida Atlantic, 36-24. Chelisa Painter led all scorers at the midway point with nine points and five rebounds. Shae Kelley nearly posted her twelfth double-double of the season in the first half, going for eight points and nine rebounds.

For the half, Old Dominion shot 46.2% from the floor on 12-26 shooting, nailed 3-6 from behind the arc and knocked down 9-12 from the FT line. Florida Atlantic was held to 31.4% (11-35) from the floor, 2-15 (13.3%) from three and 0-1 from the FT line.

Next Up for the Lady Monarchs
The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team will return to the hardwood Wednesday, January 22, when they will play host to UAB for Military Appreciation Night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
