NORFOLK, Va. – Shae Kelley recorded her fourth consecutive double-double in the Old Dominion University women’s basketball 82-57 victory over UMES at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on Saturday night. The Lady Monarchs have now reeled off three wins in a row and are 5-4 overall, while UMES falls to 3-5 overall.
Kelley scored a game-high 24 points, gathered 13 rebounds and dished out five assists, bringing her total to 90 points and 53 rebounds in the last four games. Joining Kelley is double figures were three other Lady Monarchs: Chelisa Painter (career high of 14 points and also brought down eight rebounds), Tiffany Minor (12 points and seven rebounds) and Galaisha Goodhope (10 points and 5 assists). Becca Allison scored nine points on Saturday night.
In a first half that the Lady Monarchs led for all 20 minutes and possessed a largest lead of 19 (8:03 mark), they took a 41-27 lead into the locker rooms. UMES would start the second half on a 6-0 run to cut their deficit to just eight with 18:03 showing on the clock. But Old Dominion proved to be too much for the Lady Hawks on Saturday, as the Lady Monarchs never relinquished their lead through the entirety of the game and ended the game leading by their largest amount (25) for the total 40 minutes.
The Lady Hawks were led by Shawnee Sweeney, who poured in 18 points and also grabbed six rebounds. Also in double figures for UMES was Jessica Long (10 points and five boards). Alexis Udoji also had a nice game going for 10 rebounds and eight points.
For the game, Old Dominion shot 41.9% (31-74) from the floor and UMES hit on 21 of their 61 field goal attempts for 34.4%.
FIRST HALF NOTES
The Lady Monarchs jumped out in this game and never looked back. At the 8:40 mark, ODU extended their lead to 24-9 behind 10 early points from Shae Kelley.
At the half, Old Dominion led 41-27 behind Shae Kelley’s 14 points and eight rebounds. Becca Allison scored seven points in just eight minutes off the bench for the Lady Monarchs. Galaisha Goodhope went for six points, while Tiffany Minor scored five points and hauled down five boards.
Leading the way for UMES was Shawnee Sweeney with 10 points. Old Dominion shot 39.5% from the floor compared to the Lady Hawk’s 30%.
NEXT UP FOR THE LADY MONARCHS
The Lady Monarchs will hit the road to take on (at Pittsburgh, at William and Mary, at VCU and at Duke) for nearly a month until returning back home on Jan. 5.
