WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - In a game that the Old Dominion women’s basketball team (6-5)bnever trailed William and Mary (2-7), the Lady Monarchs would go onto a 60-49 victory on Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Arena.
Junior co-captain, Shae Kelley recorded her seventh double-double of the season after her 20 points and 12 rebound performance in Williamsburg. Tiffany Minor scored nine points and hauled down eight rebounds, while Becca Allison also scored nine points and grabbed seven boards. Chelisa Painter had another solid performance as she went for seven points and four rebounds.
In the second half, the Tribe cut their deficit down to 10 points on five different occasions, but the Lady Monarchs proved to be too much down the stretch for W&M. For the game, ODU outrebounded William and Mary, 54-25. Old Dominion dominated the points in the paint (30-20), second chance points (20-6) and bench points (18-7).
Perhaps the spark of the game came from freshman Destinee Young, who got the nod for her first start of her young collegiate career, and did a little bit of everything just 17 minutes (four points, seven rebounds, two blocks and one steal).
For the game Old Dominion connected on 35.6% (21-59) of their field-goal attempts, while the Tribe knocked down 34% (18-53) of their FGA.
OPTIMA HEALTH CHALLENGE
Today’s game was apart of the annual Optima Health Challenge between Old Dominion and William and Mary. Today, 10 points were awarded to ODU in the challenge, which encompasses all athletic events between two schools. Currently the challenge’s score is 20-10 with Old Dominion in the lead. The next event of the challenge will be men’s basketball on Jan. 1 at W&M Hall. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
FIRST HALF NOTES
Old Dominion jumped out to an early 11-4 lead at the first media timeout, before extending their advantage to 17-10 behind nine quick points from the senior, Becca Allison. The Lady Monarchs would stretch their lead to 22-12 before the Tribe went on a run of their own, narrowing their deficit to 22-16 with 5:40 to play.
The under-four media timeout came at the 2:46 mark, with Old Dominion still in charge, 30-20. William and Mary drilled a three-pointer as the first half buzzer sounded, cutting into Old Dominion’s lead 32-25 as both teams headed into the locker rooms.
For the half, Shae Kelley went for eight points and seven boards, while Tiffany Minor scored six points and hauled down five rebounds. Destinee Young got the nod for her first start of her young collegiate career, and did a little bit of everything in the first 20 minutes of play (two points, six rebounds and two blocks).
LOOKING AHEAD
After a minor break from competition, the Lady Monarchs will remain on the road to take on Virginia Commonwealth University on Monday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. Next, Old Dominion will travel to Duke before returning back home on Jan. 5 when they take on North Carolina Central.
