NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s soccer team fell to UTSA, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at the ODU Soccer Complex. The Roadrunners jump to 3-9-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the CUSA, while the Lady Monarchs fall to 1-9-1 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Despite the Lady Monarch’s advantages in corners (10-3) and shots (17-12) for the game, it was the Roadrunners who came out on top in this conference matchup.
Scoring started off in the 8th minute of play, when UTSA’s Anissa Munson took three dribbles and made her way into ODU’s box, where she fired a shot past Old Dominion’s freshman keeper, Meredith Lenox, giving the Roadrunners an early 1-0 advantage.
In the 32nd minute, Lady Monarch’ freshman, Jackie Stroud finessed a shot just over the reach of UTSA’s keeper, Emma Makela, only to have the ball hit off the Roadrunner’s crossbar and fall back into the hands of Makela.
Old Dominion stayed persistent on the offensive end and was rewarded in the 35th minute, as Alexis Thomas hustled down the field and picked off a lazy UTSA pass, which resulted in a wide open net and Thomas’ first goal this season. The Lady Monarchs and the Roadrunners went into halftime with the score tied at one apiece.
Eight minutes into the second half, UTSA’s Kaytee O’Brien played a chip pass into a sprinting Happy Orere-Amadu, who was able to get behind the Lady Monarch’s last line of defense and give the Roadrunners a 2-1 lead and victory.
