Soccer Monarchs At FIU In C-USA Saturday Night Match-up

NORFOLK, VA—The ODU Soccer Monarchs (6-3-1/3-1), 29th in the latest NCAA RPI return to action Saturday night in Miami when they take on the Panthers of Florida International  at 6:30 p.m. ODU has won three of their last four matches, including two over nationally ranked C-USA foes.  This will be the first meeting between the two schools.

FIU (5-7/1-3) is led by junior forward Quentin Albrecht and junior midfielder Roberto Alterio, both with five goals each. Albrecht also has four assists and a team best 14 total points. FIU defeated Marshall, 4-0 and lost to New Mexico, 2-1 in overtime and 13th ranked UAB, 1-0.   

ODU currently ranks fourth in the C-USA in total goals with 21, but second in the league in goals per game at 2.1, trailing only UAB at 2.64.  Individually, senior Tim Hopkinson this year’s two-time C-USA Player  of the Week and recent National Player of the Week is second in C-USA in total goals with eight, tied with Tulsa’s Christian Mata and one behind UAB’s Freddy Ruiz.  Hopkinson is second in total points with 18, and leads the league with four game winning goals.  Ivan Militar is tied for ninth in the league in assists with three. Senior goalkeeper Sean Stowe is third in C-USA in total saves with 33 and sixth in save percentage at .717.

Nationally, Hopkinson ranks 13th in total goals and 24th in total points.

Head Coach Alan Dawson, C-USA’s third winningest coach is now 317-131-91 in 26 years of coaching and 188-101-31 in 17 seasons at ODU.

ODU is one of five C-USA teams ranked in the latest NCAA’s RPI top 50.   New Mexico is 14, UAB is 21, ODU is 29, Charlotte is 41 and Tulsa is 44. The Monarchs have already beaten UAB, Charlotte and Tulsa.New Mexico comes to town in the regular season home finale on Nov. 2.   

The Monarchs return home Wednesday night to host Marshall at 7 p.m. at the ODU Soccer complex.
