HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team fell to Marshall 1-0 in the 2013 C-USA opener. This was the first time in school history that ODU and Marshall squared off.

The Marshall Thundering Herd entered Friday’s matchup with a record of 5-2-1 and extended their winning streak to three after tonight’s victory and previous 1-0 wins over Miami (OH) and Liberty, respectively.

FIRST HALF
Despite the Lady Monarchs advantages in shots (4-2) and corners (3-1) in the first half, it was Marshall who possessed the 1-0 lead after 45 minutes of play.

Marshall got on the board in the 14th minute of play off a Myka DeMarco penalty kick. DeMarco leads the Herd in points (10) and goals (4) this season.

Play was physical throughout the entire game, but especially in the first half, when a total of 16 penalties (10 on Marshall) were whistled. A total of 27 penalties were called on both teams throughout the game.

SECOND HALF
Perhaps one of the best ODU opportunities came in the 77th minute, when Jessie Klamut ripped a shot that would be denied by Marshall’s crossbar.

Old Dominion’s defense put in another solid effort, but the Herd’s goal in the 14th minute proved to be the difference maker on Friday night.

For the game Old Dominion out shot Marshall 10-7 and led the corner kick count 4-2.

ODU freshman keeper Meredith Lenox saved three shots for the Lady Monarchs.

Marshall’s junior goalkeeper Lizzie Kish (Boyertown, Pa.) was only called on to save one shot on Friday night, but still picked up her sixth shutout (third consecutive) in nine games this season. All six of Marshall's wins are shutouts with Kish in the net. The Herd leads the C-USA in goals allowed (five) and goals against average (0.60), and is tied for first in shutouts (six). On Monday, Kish was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week. Kish is the first Marshall player to garner C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors since 2011.
