NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s soccer team fell to William and Mary 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the ODU Soccer Complex. This was the second and final exhibition for the Lady Monarchs before regular season play begins.
The Tribe got on the scoreboard only four minutes into the game as Aly Shaughnessy played a beautiful lead pass in through the left side to senior Dani Rutter, who was able to put her shot past freshman keeper Meredith Lenox.
In the 13th minute, Old Dominion freshman back Thyla Peterson produced a big team save for the Lady Monarchs, as Rutter was able to break free again. ODU’s defense held off W&M for the rest of the half. At the half, the Lady Monarchs only allowed William and Mary to take three shots.
In the second half, the Tribe’s Rutter netted her second goal of the game in the 62nd minute of play to give W&M a 2-0 advantage and ultimately 2-0 win. Rutter’s second goal was unassisted and came from just outside the box; a shot that she was able to curl around Lenox into the left side of the net.
Lenox protected the net the whole game for the Lady Monarchs and tallied a total of three saves. William and Mary dominated the corner kick count 8-0, as well as shots fired 13-2.
The Old Dominion University women’s soccer team will begin regular season play on Friday, August 23, at 5 p.m. against La Salle in the opening game of the JMU Tournament in Harrisonburg, Va.
