MIDLOTHIAN, VA--  ODU golf standout and  Hall of Famer  Jon Hurst (’91) along with current Monarchs, Ashton Newsom and John Dawson made the cut after two rounds of the State Open of Virginia which is being played at the Independence Golf Club.  

Hurst shot 73-70=143 and is 10 strokes behind the leader and defending champion Jay Woodson of Richmond (65-68=133). Hurst is 11th overall among amateurs.

John Dawson (Chesapeake, Va.) shot 73-74 for 147 and Newsom  (Chesapeake, VA.) shot 73-75 for 148 after 36 holes.  Tim Ritter (Chantilly, VA.)missed the cut by one stroke after shooting 76-73 for 149.

Jon Hurst became ODU’s first Division I All-American I golf. In 1991, He took sixth in the NCAA Regionals at Yale and earned All-American honors by the Golf Coaches Association after competing at the NCAA National Championships in Monterey, CA.  Hurst won five collegiate tournaments as a senior along with two second place finishes. He was third at the Sun Belt Conference Championships and won the 1990 Eastern Amateur in Portsmouth by 10 strokes.  Hurst was named the 1991 Virginia Golfer of the Year. He graduated in 1993 with a degree in sports management and was inducted into the ODU Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.  

The final two rounds will be played Saturday and Sunday.
