NORFOLK, Va. (Sept. 6) -- The defending national champion Old Dominion fieldhockey team passed its first major test of the young season Mondayafternoon with a 5-3 victory over top-ranked Maryland Foreman Field. The#2 Lady Monarchs improve to 3-0 overall (2-0 CAA) while the Terps fall to2-1 overall (0-0 ACC).
Junior co-captain Marina DiGiacomo (Mendoza, Argentina) and freshmanMarjolijn van der Sommen (Leiden, Netherlands) led the way with two goalsapiece. Virginia Beach native Laura Steadman chipped in with a goal and anassist. Both Kim Miller (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Ashleigh Miller (WestVancouver, BC, Canada) had a pair of assists for the winners.
Maryland was led by Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) who netted apair of goals and All-American Carla Tagliente (Cortland, NY) who chippedin with two assists.
The Lady Monarchs, picked second behind Maryland by Sports Illustratedfor Women, will host #9 Northeastern Friday, September 10 at 5 pm and thentake on #6 Penn State Saturday afternoon.
