MEMPHIS, Tenn. - No. 5 seed Old Dominion University men's tennis fell to No. 5 seed SMU, 4-0, Friday afternoon at the Conference USA championships.
The Monarchs finish the year 14-7 while SMU takes on top seed Tulsa, who was a 4-1 winner over East Carolina.
The match started at doubles, where SMU won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles but the duo of Carlos Lopez Villa and Can Cetinel defeated No. 83 Arturs Kazijevs and Mischa Nowicki at No. 1, 8-6. SMU earned the doubles point at No. 3 as Nate Lammons and Eduardo Razzeto were 8-4 winners.
The Mustangs got their first singles victory at No. 6 as Lammons defeated Tim Schweig, 6-4, 6-0 and Gaston Cuadranti beat Albert Ochagavia at No. 2, 6-2, 6-2.
Nowicki clinched the match for SMU as he defeated Zvonimir Podvinski in a hard-fought match at No. 5, 6-4, 6-4.
At No. 1 singles, No. 114 Lopez Villa and Kazijevs were in a battle, with Lopez Villa leading 7-6, 2-2 while Wesley Barrett was leading Alex Sanders at No. 4, 6-4, 5-5.
