ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 14 Old Dominion University coed sailing team earned a spot in the 2013 ICSA Coed Dingy National Championship Semifinals on April 27-28 in Hampton by taking third place at the America Trophy Race at the U.S. Naval Academy over the weekend.
The Monarchs earned a third place finish with 158 points behind only No. 3 Georgetown, who won the event with 115 points and No. 10 Navy (145) in the 18-team event. Senior skipper and team captain Dillon Paiva coupled with junior crew Chloe Constants and freshman crew Julia Wiesner also took third place with 76 points.
“The team sailed well across a variety of conditions,” said head coach Mitch Brindley. “We made a real effort to do all of the small things well and let the result take care of themselves. As always, focusing on the process yields a better results than the other way around.”
For the Lady Monarchs, they took 17th place at the Emily Wick Trophy Race in New London, Conn. over the weekend. Junior skipper Alexa Cavalieri finished 15th in the A-Division race with 167 points. In the B-Division race, junior skipper Rachel Austin and freshman crew Grace Mason finished 17th with 195 points. Yale won the event with 112 points followed by College of Charleston (130) and Tufts (134).
Old Dominion closes out the 2012-13 regular season next weekend by co-hosting the MAISA Women’s Championship with Hampton along with taking part in the Admiral’s Cup in Kings Point, N.Y. and the Thompson Trophy race in New London, Conn.
