NORFOLK, VA-- The UNC Wilmington (19-8/6-1) Seahawks defeated the Old Dominion Baseball Monarchs (13-12/4-7), 6-3 Saturday afternoon behind the pitching of righthanded starter Jordan Ramsey.
Rightfielder Tyler Molinaro started the Seahawks three-run second inning off with a one-out solo homer over the rightfield wall, his fifth of the season. UNCW scored three more runs in the fourth as Terence Connelly singled home Drew Farber, and later designated hitter Hunter Ridge knocked in two runs for a 6-0 Seahawk lead.
ODU Junior secondbaseman Brian Bashara (Norfolk, VA.) led off the fifth with a single and would later score the Monarchs first run after a UNCW error.
The Monarchs mounted a rally in the ninth as Tyler Urps (Wilton, CA.) reached after being hit with a pitch. Freshman centerfielder Connor Myers (Middletown, MD.) then doubled to left. A Seahawk error on junior rightfielder Ben Verlander's (Maidens, VA.) grounder brought home Urps. ODU freshman pinch hitter P.J. Higgins (Wallingford, CT.) singled home Myers to make it 6-3, but reliever Kelly Secrest got the next out to end the game.
Eight different Monarchs had one hit on the day for ODU while Drew Farber led UNCW with three hits, followed by Hunter Ridge and Terence Connelly with two each.
Ramsey pitched seven innings for the Seahawks, giving up one run, two walks and striking out sixth for his fourth win of the season. He now has a 1.46 ERA which is second in the CAA.
The two teams play the third and final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. at the ODU Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
