NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore midfielder Ashmore Standing scored a career-high five goals but it was not enough as the Old Dominion University women’s lacrosse team fell to Longwood on Wednesday evening at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex, 17-11.

Longwood (6-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and scored eight of the game’s first nine goals and never looked back to take the win. Old Dominion (3-5) was able to close the margin to six late in the second half after scoring three goals in just over 70 seconds but could get no closer.

The Lady Monarchs were able to score three of the final four goals in the first half as Standing, senior co-captain Shelby Davis and junior attacker Emily Austerberry each tallied a goal to cut the halftime deficit down to 9-4.

Standing scored the first goals of the second half but Longwood responded with six of the next seven goals to take a commanding 15-6 lead midway through the second half. The Lady Monarchs would score five of the game’s final seven games but simply ran out of time in their comeback bid.

Lauren Prasnicki, who tallied eight assists in the game to go along with three goals, led the Lancers. Katie McHugh added five goals while Sarah Buter and Jamie Brentlinger each added two goals and an assist. LU goalkeeper Christian Acker tallied 11 saves and five groundballs.

ODU outshot Longwood, 31-24, and had the 21-18 edge in groundballs but the Lancers held the 16-14 in draw controls and posted 10 saves to ODU’s three.

Aside from Standing, seniors Jordynn Collins, Meredith Rogers and Davis all also scored in addition to Austerberry, junior Courtney Clough and freshman Rachel Shaw. Davis earned five draws while Austerberry added four. Defensively, senior Alexandra Burns scooped up four groundballs and caused a game-high five turnovers.

Old Dominion heads back on the road next to face Virginia Tech on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Blacksburg.
