NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's basketball team hits the road for a pair of games to close out the regular season this week beginning on Thursday night when they head to James Madison for a 7 p.m. tip at the JMU Convocation Center in Harrisonburg.
CLOSING OUT THE CAA
ODU closes out their 22nd and final season in the CAA this week with a pair of road games. The Lady Monarchs have won 17 CAA titles (regular season and tournaments) and are 317-49 (.866) all-time in league games.
KELLEY NAMED CAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore forward Shae Kelley was named the CAA’s Co-Player of the Week along with senior Elena Delle Donne of the University of Delaware on Monday.
Kelley helped ODU go 2-0 last week as she averaged 17 points and 8.5 rebounds per game and collected her team-leading seventh double-double of the season in Thursday’s 75-64 win over William and Mary.
The sophomore has scored in double figures in five straight games and nine of the last 12 games. From the field last week, Kelley shot a stellar .750 (12-for-16) including a season-best .875 (7-for-8) on Sunday in ODU’s blowout win over Hofstra, 80-57.
While going 10-of-14 from the free throw line (.714), she added six assists, five steals and a block on the week and has now scored in double-digits in 19 games this season.
TOUGH FINAL STRETCH
The Feb. 10 game at Drexel started a stretch of four games in eight days for ODU who finishes the regular season taking on six opponents with winning CAA records in their final seven games.
PROTECTING HOME COURT
ODU posted an overall record of 12-4 at the Ted this season along with a 7-2 record in the CAA. Old Dominion finishes 170-15 (.919) all-time in CAA regular season games at home.
Old Dominion ranks 41st nationally out of 343 teams and is second in the CAA this season with an average of 2,605 fans per game at home at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
TURNING UP THE DEFENSIVE PRESSURE
After forcing 20 turnovers by William and Mary on Feb. 21, Old Dominion has now forced 20 turnovers or more in 17 of their 28 games this season. The Lady Monarchs lead the league overall (568) and in CAA games (285) is turnovers forced.
CASHING IN ON FREE THROWS
ODU has been hot from the free throw line since CAA play has started. In six of of their league games, the Lady Monarchs have shot over 80% from the chairty stripe including a season high 86.2% from the line vs. Hofstra on Feb. 24. In 11 of their 16 CAA games this season, ODU is 71% or better from the free throw line. Overall in CAA action this season, ODU is shooting 73.5% (227-309).
BENCH HELP
The Lady Monarchs continue to utilize their bench having outscored the opposition 712-363 in bench points this season. 39 percent of ODU’s season point total has come from their bench compared to just 22 percent from the opposition. In CAA play, the ODU bench is outscoring the opposing bench, 423-184.
ODU has had more bench points in 22 of their 28 games this season.

SERIES HISTORY
Thursday’s meeting will be the 77th and final meeting as CAA foes between ODU and JMU in the modern era with the Lady Monarchs holding the 52-24 advantage. The Dukes have won four in a row and nine of the last 11 in the series with ODU’s last victory coming on on Jan. 9, 2011 in Norfolk, 71-55.
SCOUTING THE DUKES
The Dukes come in at 18-9 overall and 12-3 in CAA action and in a tie second place in the league. James Madison is coming off a heartbreaking 61-60 loss at #18/19 Delaware on Sunday.
Senior guard Tarik Hislop is one the league’s best players averaging 16.8 points per game to go along with 96 assists while junior guard Kirby Burkholder adds 15.1 points per contest with 47 steals, 72 three-pointers and 8.5 rebounds per game.
Head Coach Kenny Brooks is in his 11th season at the helm of the JMU program. The Dukes return four starters from the 2011-12 WNIT runner-up squad. Last season, JMU went 29-8 overall and 14-4 in conference play. As a team, Madison blocked 172 shots from opponents last season and tallied 1,674 rebounds, both new school records. Senior guard/forward Nikki Newman who accounted for 52 of those denials and averaged a team-leading 7.8 rebounds per game, returns to the lineup as the reigning CAA Defensive Player of the Year. The two main scorers for the Dukes in 2011-12 also return to the court. Senior guard Tarik Hislop and junior guard Kirby Birkholder each averaged double-digit point production during their All-CAA season, dropping 14.8 ppg and 11.5 ppg, respectively last season. JMU was picked to finish second in the CAA this season.
LAST TIME OUT
Behind a season-high 48 points in the first half, ODU coasted past Hofstra on Senior Day at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, 80-57, on Feb. 24.
The 80 points scored was the second most this season by ODU and the most in a CAA contest as they shot 46.3 percent (25-54) and held Hofstra to just 28.8 percent (19-66) in the game.
Both seniors that were honored for Old Dominion provided a well balanced attack as Jackie Cook scored 17 points and added seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block while Mairi Buchan chipped in six points, six rebounds, a block and steal and tied her season-high with six assists.
Shae Kelley matched Cook with a game-high 17 points to go with seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and block while sophomore Ashley Betz-White set a season-high in three pointers with three as she added 12 points, two assists and a rebound. Redshirt junior Becca Allison tallied 12 points, three assists and two rebounds.
ODU shot a season-best 86.2 percent from the free throw line as they also set season-bests in both free throws made (25) and attempts (29).
For Hofstra, All-America center Shante Evans was contained to just 10 points and seven rebounds along with three assists and three steals. Evans exploded for 26-second half points and a game-high 30 points in the first meeting between the two teams in Hempstead back on Jan. 20. Anma Onyeukuk led the Pride with 16 points and thee assists while Candace Bond added a game-high nine rebounds and Andreana Thomas collected six assists.
BUCHAN EARNS ACADEMIC AWARD
Redshirt senior Mairi Buchan was named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team on Jan. 31 for the second straight year. The teams are selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Buchan holds a 3.93 grade point average majoring in biology (pre-med).
ATOP THE CAA IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION
Old Dominion finished tied for the best non-conference record in the league at 9-3 along with Delaware.
Both the nine non-conference wins and the 9-3 start are bests for ODU since the 2007- 08 season when they went to the Sweet 16 with a record of 31-5.
BAREFOOT PRINTS
ODU head coach Karen Barefoot enters her 14th year as a head coach in 2012-13 and 200 plus wins in her career as she leads the Lady Monarch program in year two. As head coach at the Apprentice School in 2001, she led the Builders to a National Championship in the school's first ever women's sport while taking Lenoir-Rhyne the NCAA Tournament in the 2002-03 season. In 2010-11 while at Elon, she led the Phoenix to the WBI, the schools first ever women's basketball tournament appearance. The last time that ODU made the NCAA Tournament was in 2008 when Barefoot was an assistant coach for the Lady Monarchs and helped them make the Sweet 16.
CAA ROOKIE AWARDS
With LaQuanda Younger picking up her second CAA Rookie of the Week honors this season on Jan. 21, that marks the eighth time since the beginning of the 2011-12 season that an ODU player has recieved this award. Last season, Ashley Betz-White, the CAA Rookie of the Year, was honored four times while freshman Galaisha Goodhope earned the honor on Jan. 7 this season.

The Karen Barefoot Coach's Shows continue to pack the house at YNot Pizza in the Village behind the Ted. Joined by host Doug Ripley, Barefoot reviews the previous week's game and gives insight into the upcoming Lady Monarch matchups all season long. The next show is scheduled for Tuesday, March 19th at 6 p.m.
LADY MONARCHS INK TWO
Coach Barefoot announced the addition of Odegua Oigbokie and Destinee Young who signed letters of intent to play for the Lady Monarchs next fall on Nov. 14.
Oigbokie is a highly touted forward from Ridgeway High School in Memphis, Tenn., while Young is a power forward out of Hoffman Estates High School in Hoffmann Estates, Ill.
Oigbokie, who is 6-foot-1, averaged 18 points and eight rebounds as a junior and has been named all-district and all-region for Ridgeway the past two seasons. Young, who is also 6-foot-1, averaged 15.4 points and 11 rebounds as a junior at Hoffman Estates High School, where she already is the record holder for career rebounds and single-season blocks.
Out of the five recruits that second-year head coach Karen Barefoot has landed at ODU, four have been rated as three stars or better by ESPN. The other three were local freshmen guards Galaisha Goodhope out of Norfolk and LaQuanda Younger of Newport News and forward Chelisa Painter from Chesapeake who is sitting out this season after transferring from George Washington.
NEWCOMERS
Head Coach Karen Barefoot added three freshmen this season in local talented guards Galaisha Goodhope and LaQuanda Younger along with center Brittany Martin out of the New York. Transferring in are forward Shae Kelley and Miami (FL) transfer guard Stephanie Gardner. The incoming class is ranked the best in the CAA and No. 42 in the country overall.
