NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's basketball team fell to James Madison on Tuesday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, 68-56, marking the first time all season that the Lady Monarchs have lost consecutive games.
Old Dominion (16-8, 7-5) was able to absorb a 9-0 start to the game by James Madison (16-8, 10-2) and went on a 27-18 run after that to take a tie game into half and even took a lead early in the second half but the Dukes were able to prevail late to win their fourth straight game in the series.
JMU outrebounded the Lady Monarchs after halftime, 27-12, and outscored ODU, 41-29, behind the play of senior Tarik Hislop, who scored 18 of her game-high 22 points after halftime to spur on the Dukes.
The Lady Monarchs were led by sophomore Shae Kelley's 18 points and eight rebounds, marking the 15th time this season she has scored in double figures as she also added two assists, two steals and a block. Redshirt senior Mairi Buchan matched her season highs in rebounds with seven and in three-pointers with three as she poured in 13 points and also matched her career-high with three blocks.
The Dukes were able to pull away midway through the first half as they extended their lead up to 12 points at one point before ODU made things interesting late with a pair of steals to pull to within seven but could not get any closer as JMU shot 43.8 percent in the second half.
Freshman Galaisha Goodhope registered a career-high 34 minutes of action after sophomore starter Ashley Betz-White went down with a head injury after taking a charge in the first half. Goodhope set a career-high with six rebounds and added seven points, three steals and three assists.
Toia Giggetts registered a double-double for the Dukes with 17 rebounds and 10 points along with a block and a steal while Precious Hall added 15 points and four steals for JMU who outrebounded ODU, 54-38.
Old Dominion heads back on the road for a 7 p.m. tip on Thursday at No. 20/22 Delaware before returning home for a three-game stretch starting on Sunday in the 11th annual Hoops for the Cure game at 2 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center against Northeastern.
