NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware (13-12/8-4)rallied from 10 points down to defeat Old Dominion (3-22/1-12), 75-73 at the Bob Carpenter Center Monday Night. Senior forward DeShawn Painter led ODU with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Devon Saddler led UD with 24 points.
Delaware led by one at halftime, 34-33, but the Monarchs came out in the second halfWith a 17-6 run for a 10-point, 50-40 lead with 12:06 left after red-shirt sophomore Dimitri Batten's two free throws.
Delaware rallied to tie the game at 63-63 on two Devon Saddler free throws with 5:05 left in the game. DeShawn Painter then hit a three-pointer to put the Monarchs back up, 66-63, but Saddler's layup with 2:54 left gave the Fightin' Blue Hen's the lead for good, at 67-66. After a couple of Monarch misses, Jarvis Threatt hits a jumper for a 69-66 lead with 1:14 left in the game.
Saddler would then hit four of four free throws and threat two free throws to clinch the win for the Blue Hens.
Four Monarchs scored in double figures led by Painter with 22, junior Donte Hill and red-shirt sophomore Dimitri Batten both scored 15 and freshman Aaron Bacote added 10.
Saddler, who scored 17 points in the second half finished with 24, followed by 12 from Kyle Anderson, And 10 each by Josh Brinkley and Threatt.
UD shot .475 (28-59) from the floor while ODU was .400 (28-70). The Blue Hens outrebounded ODU, 41-38. Threatt led UD with 13 boards, while Painter had 12 for ODU. It was Painters eighth double-double of the year.
Richard Ross led the Monarchs with three steals and two blocked shots, while Donte Hill and Painter each had a team best three assists.
The Monarchs return home to host William And Mary Saturday afternoon at 12 noon in the Constant Center in a Comcast Sportsnet televised contest. At halftime ODU's basketball alumni will be recognized.
