ATLANTA, Ga. – The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team used a furious 42-16 rally to end the game and overcome a 20-point second half deficit to stun Georgia State on Sunday afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena in their CAA opener, 72-66.
The win is the 950th in program history and improves ODU to 21-1 all-time in CAA openers while the Lady Monarchs moved to 14-1 all-time against the Panthers.
Freshman Galaisha Goodhope scored a career-high 21 points to lead all scorers with 19 of those points coming in the second half. Sophomore Ashley Betz-White added 14 points and three assists to power ODU.
Down 50-30 with 13:21 remaining in the game, Old Dominion (10-3, 1-0) was able to chip away and eventually seize control late against a Georgia State (8-4, 0-1) team that shot just 27.6 percent in the second half (8-29). ODU meanwhile shot 48.4 percent from the field after halftime (15-31) and went 16-for-20 from the free throw line in the second half.
GSU turned the ball over 26 times with ODU scoring 26 points off those GSU miscues.
The Panthers shot 44.8 percent (13-29) from the field in the first half and took a 35-24 lead into half. For the game, GSU was led by Cody Paulk’s 11 points and 15 rebounds while Kendra Long had 15 points and four assists. GSU outrebounded ODU, 43-35.
Sophomore Tiffany Minor matched her career with 10 points while junior Shakeva Richards, playing in her hometown, added seven points and six assists. The ODU bench outscored GSU, 40-17.
Old Dominion opens conference play at home on Thursday evening when they host the Towson Tigers at 7 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Live stats, audio and video will be available.
