WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's basketball team fell to William and Mary on Sunday afternoon at Kaplan Arena, 73-69.
In a highly contested back-and-forth affair, William and Mary (4-14, 2-5) shot a sizzling 56.6 percent from the field, including 66.7 percent in the second half, to fend off Old Dominion (13-6, 4-3) in the first of two meetings this season. With the win, the Tribe moves up to a 40-30 lead in the annual Optima Health Challenge. The two teams meet again in Norfolk on Feb. 21.
Sophomore Shae Kelley recorded her fifth double-double of the season and second in as many games as she led ODU with 18 points, 10 rebounds, six steals and three assists. Sophomore Tiffany Minor matched her career-high with 10 points for the second straight game while freshman LaQuanda Younger set new career-highs with four assists and six rebounds to go with nine points.
The game featured seven lead changes and seven ties but the Tribe was able to persevere late behind the strong performance of senior Janine Aldridge who scored a game-high 26 points and was 11-for-15 form the field including 6-for-6 in the second half. She connected on four three-pointers and had three rebounds and four steals.
Senior Jackie Cook scored in double figures for the 13th time in 18 games this season with 12 points as she eclipsed 900 points in her ODU career in addition to connecting on her 100th career three-point basket on Sunday. Old Dominion forced 23 Tribe turnovers, making it the 13th time this season that an opponent has 20 or more turnovers.
The eight three-pointers made by the Tribe was the most allowed by ODU all season and Sunday was the first time they allowed any opponent to shoot over 50 percent from the field since Louisiana Tech shot 57.1 percent against the Lady Monarchs on Nov. 25, 2011.
The league's fourth leading scorer in Emily Correal was limited to just two points and two rebounds. Kaitlyn Mathieu poured in a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Jaclyn McKenna had 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals for the Tribe.
Old Dominion heads back home for a pair of games beginning on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Drexel at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
