NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion and William and Mary’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both went down to the final relay race before the winner could be established. ODU’s men defeated William and Mary 153-141. The Lady Monarchs lost in heartbreaking fashion, 144-140. In all, Old Dominion’s swimmers set four pool records today.
Saturday’s meet marked the last home competition for eight of Old Dominion’s swimmers: Bernardo Figueredo have been very solid for the Monarchs all season, and today was no different. Sa had a pair of second place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle (46.37) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.69). Figueredo placed second in the 100-yard freestyle (9:39.23) and finished third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.16).
In that 500-yard freestyle race, Hector Tricas Vidal finished in 4:44.47 and just ahead of Figueredo, which earned him a second place finish. Tricas Vidal also had a third place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:39.28).
Jason Haigh placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.62).
Carter Watson finished in second place in the 200-yard IM (1:54.62).
Edward Hubert took third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.12.
Diving:
Danny Rabe finished in first place in the 1-meter diving competition with a final score of 226.27.
Mitchell Ortiz won the 3-meter event (271.43).
Lady Monarchs: 140 William and Mary: 144
All five of the Lady Monarch’s seniors played a major role in nearly lifting ODU past William and Mary.
As usual, Kimberley Rashleigh came up big for the Lady Monarchs on Saturday. The Australian-native won three races: the 100-yard backstroke (57.11), 200-yard backstroke (2:01.85) and the 200-yard IM (2:07.00). Rashleigh’s time of 2:01.85 set a new pool record for the 200-yard backstroke.
Rashleigh also anchored a team consisting of Savannah Bowers, Ashley Luchsinger and Morgan Johnson to a second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:34.05). Luchsinger closed out a terrific career at home with two additional second place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly (58.24) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.94).
Jessica Hubert had a spectacular senior day in the water for the Lady Monarchs. Hubert won the 100-yard butterfly (56.85) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.25). Hubert’s 2:02.25 finishing-time in the 200-yard butterfly set a J.C. “Scrap” Chandler Pool record.
Hubert, along with Chelsea Martin, Laura Cempel and Juliana Santos finished in third place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:49.22.
Yesim Girensunlu won the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.66) and the 1000-yard freestyle (10:11.71).
Laura Cempel made her senior day one to remember as she won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.71). Cempel also finished in second place in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.13).
Danielle Naylor helped the Lady Monarchs with a pair of third place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.17) and the 1000-yard freestyle(10:29.61).
Abby Vance finished in second place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.27).
Savannah Bowers finished the 200-yard freestyle race in 1:53.57, which earned her a second place finish.
Diving:
Kady Holland won the women’s 1-meter (176.25) and the 3-meter (174.67) diving competitions for the Lady Monarchs.
Old Dominion will not be in action for a month, as they prepare for the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, which begin on Feb. 27 in Fairfax, Va.
