NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University men's tennis defeated Norfolk State 5-2 in its home opener Sunday evening at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center.
Carlos Lopez Villa clinched the team win for the Monarchs with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.
Dante Terenzio got ODU their first singles victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 while Wesley Barrett followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Zvonimir Podvinski earned his first collegiate win with a tough 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win at No. 6.
The Spartans earned their wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, as Dzmitry Zyhmantovich and Robin Riethmuller picked up victories.
ODU won the doubles point as No. 34 ranked Barrett and Tim Schweig cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 3 and No. 23 Lopez Villa and Can Cetinel were 8-4 winners at No. 1. Kuwert and Ochagavia edged out Braga and Riethmuller 8-7 at No. 2 doubles to complete the sweep.
"That was a tough match against a much improved Norfolk State squad," Head Coach Aljosa Piric said. "We need to understand our identity as a team and execute it with more confidence. This match gives is valuable experience going forward. We will use it and get better."
The Monarchs are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 26 when they host Richmond at 1 p.m.
