NORFOLK, VA--ODU red-shirt sophomore Dimitri Batten scored 14 and junior guard Donte Hill added 13, but Georgia State (8-11/3-3) defeated the Monarchs, 69-54 at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Manny Atkins led GSU With 21 points, while R.J. Hunter added 20 for the Panthers.
The Monarchs (2-16/0-6) got within two points, 45-43 with 10:47 left in the game after red-shirt sophomore forward Richard Ross hit his first three-pointer of the season (It was also his first attempt this year.), but Markus Crider and R.J. Hunter hit back-to-back buckets to give the Panthers a 49-43 lead With 7:57 left.
ODU would get no closer than six, 57-51 with 5:11 remaining after a Dmiitri Batten Layup. Hunter then hit a bucket after a steal, then scored on a jumper, followed by a three-pointer from Devonta White to push the lead to 13, at 64-51.
Georgia State shot .404 (23-57) from the field and edged ODU in rebounding, 37-36. James Vincent led the Panthers with a game high 12 rebounds along with four blocked shots.
ODU shot .354 (17-48) from the field. Nick Wright, Donte Hill and Richard Ross each had seven rebounds in the game. Both teams made seven three-pointers.
The Monarchs blocked a season high nine shots on the night as Ross swatted a career high five. The victory by Georgia State was their first over ODU in Norfolk since 1977-78 and their first win over the Monarchs overall since 2008-09, ending an ODU six-game winning streak against them.
ODU returns to action next Saturday in Harrisonburg, VA against James Madison in a 4 p.m. Comcast Televised contest.
