NORFOLK, VA-- Marcus Gilbert's free throw and a layup by Maurice Barrow lifted the Stags of Fairfield (9-5) to a 55-54 come-from-behind win over the Monarchs of Old Dominion Saturday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. ODU (2-11) would only score four points in the final eight minutes.
The Monarchs charged ahead to a 10 point lead, 50-40 with 8:23 left in the game thanks to a 16-8 run where ODU's DeShawn Painter scored six points in that stretch. The Stags then finished the game with a 15-4 run of its own to pull out the win.
With 4:56 left in the game, Colin Nickerson scored on a layup to make it 52-49. after he missed the free throw, teammate Desmond wade hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 52-52 with 4:11 left.
Marcus Gilbert sank a free throw to put Fairfield up, 53-52, with 2:39 left then with 1:12 remaining Maurice Barrow's layup gave the Stags a 55-52 lead. ODU cut it to one on a DeShawn Painter basket, but the Monarchs were unable to steal the inbound pass as time ran out.
Painter led ODU with 16 points, 11 rebounds and a career high four blocked shots. For Painter, it was his fourth double-double of the year. He was followed by Richard Ross's 15 points, and five rebounds. Fairfield was led by Amadou Sidibe with 10 points while Marcus Gilbert scored eight and hauled down 10 rebounds.
ODU freshman Aaron Bacote dished out a career high five assists and came up witha career high three steals.
The Monarchs outrebounded Fairfield, 35-26, but committed 15 turnovers. ODU also blocked eight shots and had six steals, while the Stags had six blocked shots and eight steals. The Monarchs shot .467 (21-45) from the field and Fairfield who had already beaten St. Joseph's and Drexel shot .451 (23-51).
ODU returns to action Wednesday at 7 pm. When they return to CAA play hosting James Madison.
