ODU Game Notes
NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's basketball team heads north on Tuesday to square off with Maryland Eastern Shore at 6 p.m. at the Hytche Athletic Center.
SERIES HISTORY
The Lady Monarchs and Hawks have met on only one previous occasion and it came just last season in Norfolk with UMES coming out with 63-59 victory on Dec. 21, 2011.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
UMES lost at George Mason to open the season, 64-38 and then defeated Elizabeth City State in their home opener on Saturday, 66-62. The Hawks were picked to finish sixth in the MEAC in the preseason polls. UMES comes into the season with one of the youngest rosters in the country. The Lady Hawks have nine freshmen on the roster, tying with Maine for the most freshmen on a D-I women’s basketball team this season. The UMES freshmen, who hail from six different states, make up over half the roster with nine of the 16 players.
The top four scorers from last season, Chelsea Sanders, Kwinnyata Mercer, Adobi Agbasi and Amber Cook, all finished their careers last year. The team lost over 78% of its scoring from last season into this year. The leading scorer among returners is senior Karona Roach, who averaged four points a game last year, followed by senior Sha-Kiyla Finney’s 2.3 points a contest.
Karen BarefootODU head coach Karen Barefoot enters her 14th year as a head coach in 2012-13 and 200 plus wins in her career as she leads the Lady Monarch program in year two. As head coach at the Apprentice School in 2001, she led the Builders to a National Championship in the school's first ever women's sport while taking Lenoir-Rhyne the NCAA Tournament in the 2002-03 season. In 2010-11 while at Elon, she led the Phoenix to the WBI, the schools first ever women's basketball tournament appearance. The last time that ODU made the NCAA Tournament was in 2008 when Barefoot was an assistant coach for the Lady Monarchs and helped them make the Sweet 16.
Jackie Cook NAMED CAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior Jackie Cook was named the CAA Player of the Week on Monday, Nov. 19 after leading the Lady Monarchs to a 2-0 record on the week with wins over USC Upstate and former CAA opponent VCU. The senior averaged team highs of 18.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
She opened the week scoring a career-high 24 points against USC Upstate in 27 minutes of play on 83.3 percent shooting (10-of-12) from the floor to go along with a career-high five steals. On Saturday, Cook missed tying her career-best by one in rebounds with 10 boards against VCU in recording her second career double-double as she added 12 points.
Cook finished the week shooting 66.7 percent (14-for-21) from the field, 66.7 percent (4-for-6) from long range and 80 percent (4-for-5) from the free-throw line. The senior also added six assists, seven steals and one block on the week for the Lady Monarchs.
LADY MONARCHS BLOW PAST RAMS
Jackie Cook registered her second career double-double and was one of three Lady Monarchs to register double figures as Old Dominion snapped its four-game losing streak to VCU on Saturday with a 74-51 win in Norfolk.
ODU has now won 56 of the 70 all-time meetings. The 3-0 start for the Lady Monarchs is their first since the 2007-08 season while the 23-point victory over VCU is their largest since a 94-66 victory in Norfolk on Feb. 24, 2006.
Cook scored 12 points and scooped a game-high 10 rebounds while sophomore Ashley Betz-White scored a season-high 17 points to go along with four steals and three rebounds. Sophomore Myeisha Hall was the game’s leading scorer at halftime with 10 points and five rebounds and finished with 11 points and eight rebounds in the contest.
Old Dominion’s pressure defense continues to give opponents trouble as the Rams were forced into 25 turnovers with ODU scoring 22 points off those turnovers. VCU shot just 15.4% from three-point range as they were 2-for-13 in the game and shot just 31.3% from the field overall. ODU had a 16-0 advantage in fast break points.
Karen Barefoot SHOW
The first Karen Barefoot show of the 2012-13 season took place at a packed YNot Pizza in the Village behind the Ted on Wednesday. Joined by host Doug Ripley, Barefoot reviews the previous week's game and gives insight into the upcoming Lady Monarch matchups all season long. The next show is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 27th at 6 p.m.
CAPTAINS
Senior guard Jackie Cook, senior forward Mairi Buchan and sophomore forward Jackie Cook have been selected as team captains for the 2012-13 season.
LADY MONARCHS INK TWO
Coach Barefoot announced the addition of Odegua Oigbokie and Destinee Young who signed letters of intent to play for the Lady Monarchs next fall on Nov. 14.
Oigbokie is a highly touted forward from Ridgeway High School in Memphis, Tenn., while Young is a power forward out of Hoffman Estates High School in Hoffmann Estates, Ill.
Oigbokie, who is 6-foot-1, averaged 18 points and eight rebounds as a junior and has been named all-district and all-region for Ridgeway the past two seasons. Young, who is also 6-foot-1, averaged 15.4 points and 11 rebounds as a junior at Hoffman Estates High School, where she already is the record holder for career rebounds and single-season blocks.
Out of the five recruits that second-year head coach Karen Barefoot has landed at ODU, four have been rated as three stars or better by ESPN. The other three were local freshmen guards Galaisha Goodhope out of Norfolk and LaQuanda Younger of Newport News and forward Chelisa Painter from Chesapeake who is sitting out this season after transferring from George Washington.
STEPPING UP DEFENSIVELY
In three games this season, ODU has forced 75 turnovers, collected 33 steals and held their opponents to just 3-for-31 (9.7%) from beind the three-point line.
NEWCOMERS
Head Coach Karen Barefoot added three freshmen this season in local talented guards Galaisha Goodhope and LaQuanda Younger along with center Brittany Martin out of the New York. Transferring in are forward Shae Kelley and Miami (FL) transfer guard Stephanie Gardner. The incoming class is ranked the best in the CAA and No. 42 in the country overall.
