NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's rowing team had a successful day in Philadelphia, Penn. at the Head of Schuylkill Regatta. The weekend was capped off by a first place finish in the Frosh/Novice Eight race.
In the Frosh/Novice Eight race, coxswain Lydia Cleveland helped lead ODU to a victory with Marisa Fruetel at stroke, Keira Flanagan at 7, Colleen Rennie at 6, Raven Howser at 5, Ashley Nardiello at 4, Brett Wolff at 3, Lauren Wright at 2, and Jenna Sterling at bow. Old Dominion's freshmen finished the race with a time of 14:52, which was good enough to win the Schuylkill Navy "Commodore Cup". The Lady Monarchs crossed the finish line before the other 26 competing boats and nearly 13 seconds ahead of Navy who finished in second place.
In the first race of the day, Old Dominion's `A' boat finished third in the Open Four race with a time of 15:42. ODU finished just four seconds behind Michigan State's `B' boat who took second place, while Michigan State's `A' boat won the race. The Lady Monarchs `B' boat also finished in the top 10, with a time of 16:10 which was good enough for ninth out of 38 total boats.
In the last race of the day, Old Dominion's `A' boat took eighth out of 27 boats with a time of 12:21 in the Championship Eights race. ODU's `B' boat was severely penalized as problems with the steering mechanism prevented them from using the rudder down the course.
Head coach, Daniel Garbutt said, "This was a pretty successful weekend for the Monarchs. Overall, I am very pleased with how all of the crews raced and we even came away with a cup."
The Lady Monarchs will return to action Saturday, November 3-4 in Chattanooga, Tenn. for the Head of the Hooch.
