Old Dominion Wins Riley Cup to Open Fall Season

NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 15 Old Dominion University coed sailing team won the annual Riley Cup to being their 2012-13 season this weekend.

The event, which was held on the Elizabeth River, featured two solid days of weather with cooling temperatures setting in on Sunday. Old Dominion won the 17-team event with a score of 85 followed by Washington College (100), Navy (115), Virginia (121) and Georgetown (126).

ODU’s A-team, which featured freshman skipper Esteban Forrer and junior crew Julia Wiesner, finished first with 37 points. The alternate ODU team of sophomore skipper Jake Spracher and junior crew Haley Garst placed fourth with 60 points in the A-team race.

In the B-team race, junior skipper Mark Miedama and freshman crew Grace Mason took fourth with 48 points while the ODU alternate team of freshman skipper Joe David and junior crew Alexa Cavalieri took fifth with 66 points.

Also in action this weekend in individual racing in Annapolis, Md., ODU had several sailors participating in the Laser South and the Navy Women’s Radial Open. After dodging storms on Saturday, Sunday provided cooler temperatures and a relatively steady wind.

Senior Collin Leon led ODU in the Laser South with a score of 132 and an eighth place finish while junior Evan Hoffmann took 10th (151), senior Zachary Runci took 11th (174) and sophomore Daniel Lochner placed 13th (192).

In the Navy Women’s Radial Open, sophomore Andrea Luna led the way for the Lady Monarch with a seventh place finish and 115 points. She was followed by junior Rachel Austin in 13th (185), sophomore Jaclyn Hollander in 14th (202) and junior Corina Radtke in 16th (212).

ODU is back in action next weekend at the Edward Teach Memorial in Hampton, the Mrs. Hurst Bowl in Hanover, N.H. and the Nevin’s Trophy race in Kings Point, N.Y.
