NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 11 Old Dominion University coed and women's sailing teams will be back in action this upcoming weekend with four different events on the slate.
The Danmark Trophy will take place in New London, Conn., while the MAISA Fall Women’s Dinghy will be held in St. Mary’s, Md. Also, ODU will be hosting the Senator’s Cup/South #1 starting on Saturday. Finally, the T.S. Stern race will be going on in Charleston, S.C.
ODU moved up to No. 11 in this week's Sperry Top-Sider Sailing World Rankings. The ODU women were also ranked nationally for this first time in this 2012-13 season as they came in ranked No. 11.
Both junior Evan Hoffmann and freshman Joe David finished in the top-6 at the MAISA Laser Qualifier in Annapolis, Md. over this past weekend and will advance to the Carl Van Dyne Regatta hosted by Navy on Oct. 6-7. Hoffmann finished third out of 18 racers with 100 points. David finished in sixth place with 131 points. Sophomore Jake Spracher finished in 13th place with 206 points.
In other action over the weekend, ODU finished third out of 18 teams at the St. Mary’s Open in St. Mary’s, Md. with 241 points. ODU’s A-team, which featured senior skipper Dillon Paiva junior crew Chloe Constants finished fourth with 123 points. In the B-team race, freshman skipper Esteban Forrer and junior crew Julia Wiesner finished in third place with 118 points.
Also in action this past weekend in Annapolis, Md., the MAISA Women’s Singlehanded Championships took place. Junior Corina Radtke led a trio of Lady Monarchs by finishing 12th out of 16 racers with 180 points. Junior Rachel Austin finished in 13th place with 182 points. Sophomore Jaclyn Hollander finished in 16th place with 204 points.
