NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 8 Old Dominion University field hockey team begins a six-game homestand this weekend when they host Richmond on Friday at 5 p.m. and then squares off against Delaware on Sunday at 1 p.m. in their CAA home opener at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.

LAST TIME OUT
Old Dominion (6-3, 2-0) opened the CAA slate last weekend on the road with a pair of victories to start out 2-0 in league play. On Friday, Hofstra scored back-to-back goals in less than a minute to take a 2-0 lead early but ODU responded with seven unanswered goals to cruise past the Pride, 7-2. Redshirt junior Christy Longacre became the first Lady Monarch to score more than one goal in a game this season as she netted two goals while redshirt sophomores Nicole Goff and Katy Fuhrman, sophomore Lydia Velzian and freshmen Sarah Breen and Celine Marquet each scored for ODU. Breen and sophomore Kelsey Smither had two assists each for the Lady Monarchs.

On Sunday in a battle of the top ranked CAA teams this season, ODU came away with a 2-1 victory over No. 8 Northeastern. A wide open senior Kimberly Oakes scored the game’s initial goal and then just before half on a penalty corner, Breen’s shot was deflected in by Marquet in what proved to be the game-winner as ODU defeated their fourth ranked opponent this season and second top-10 team.

RANKED LADY MONARCHS
ODU is ranked eighth in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. The Lady Monarchs have been ranked in the top-10 for 15 consecutive weeks dating back to last season.

BREEN NAMED CAA PLAYER AND ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Breen was named the CAA Player and Rookie of the Week on Tuesday after registering a goal and three assists over the weekend. Down 2-0 at Hofstra on Friday, Breen got the Lady Monarchs on the board off a penalty corner. She also had a pair of assists on the next two goals to give ODU the lead as they scored seven unanswered goals. On Sunday, she recorded the game-winning assist over No. 8 Northeastern as Marquet deflected her shot on a penalty corner in just before the half that ultimately gave the Lady Monarchs the 2-1 win over the Huskies. Breen leads the team in points (14) this season and is tied for the team lead in goals (5).

SPREADING THE WEALTH
The Lady Monarchs have spread the wealth this season on the offensive end as 10 different players have scored a goal. Villagra has four goals and three assists while Longacre has five goals and Smither has six assists to power the ODU offense. Redshirt senior Marla Petriello has allowed just nine goals for a 1.79 goals against average and has collected 21 saves while going 4-1 as a starter.

SCOUTING THE SPIDERS
Richmond (5-3) is coming off a 4-0 win at Davidson and a 5-2 win at home over Longwood. The Spiders have faced four ranked opponents this season, going 1-3 in those games with a 4-1 win at No. 25 American to start the season. The Spiders are led by junior Chelsea Davies with five goals and five assists, sophomore Rebecca Barry with four goals and five assists and freshman Taylor Deitrick with six goals on offense. Sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Wentling has allowed just seven goals for a 1.56 goals against average while collecting 12 saves in five games.

Old Dominion is 30-0 all-time against Richmond. Last season, the Lady Monarchs defeated the Spiders, 2-0, in Richmond.

BLUE HENS REPORT
Delaware (4-7, 0-0) is led by freshman Michaela Patzner who has five goals and an assist and sophomore Kelsey McKee who has four goals and two assists this season. Junior goalie Sarah Scher has a 3.15 goals against average with 48 saves while allowing 29 goals. UD plays at No. 19 William and Mary on Friday night. The Blue Hens are coming off a trip to North Carolina where they won at Appalachian State, 2-1, and fell at No. 14 Wake Forest, 3-0. The Blue Hens have faced six ranked opponents this season, going 0-6 against them.

The Lady Monarchs hold a 10-2-1 all-time series advantage over Delaware. ODU won in Newark last season, 5-0. UD’s last win over ODU came in 2009 in Newark, 4-0.
