HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The No. 9 Old Dominion University field hockey team scored seven unanswered goals on Friday afternoon to defeat Hofstra in their CAA opener, 7-2, at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.
The seven goals scored were the most Old Dominion (5-3) has scored this season and the most given up by Hofstra (5-4) all year. The Lady Monarchs move to 10-1 all-time against the Pride with the win.
The Pride scored first as Micaela Gallagher converted Hofstra’s first shot of the game into a goal. Just 59 seconds later, Lauren Del Valle cashed in when she tipped in a pass from Gallagher on the left side to make it 2-0 just under 15 minutes into the contest.
That would be it for Hofstra on the day as ODU quickly responded off a penalty corner when freshman Sarah Breen scored on an assist from sophomore Kelsey Smither. Less than five minutes later, the Lady Monarchs again took advantage off a penalty corner as redshirt junior co-captain Christy Longacre put it past Hofstra goalkeeper Kaitlyn De Turo with an assist from Breen to knot the game up at 2-2.
Redshirt sophomore Katy Fuhrman scored for the second consecutive game late in the first half when she blasted a pass from Breen in off the right post. Just two minutes later, sophomore Lydia Velzian converted on ODU’s first penalty stroke of the 2012 season to give the Lady Monarchs a 4-2 halftime advantage.
ODU picked up where they left off to begin the second half as less than five minutes in, redshirt sophomore Nicole Goff scored her second goal of the season after a long pass into the circle when she converted from five yards out. Longacre became the first ODU player to score more than one goal in a game this season at the 43:16 mark when she bounced in a rebound in front of the goal to make it 6-2.
Freshman Celine Marquet capped off the Lady Monarch scoring when she redirected a shot from the outside on Smither’s second assist of the game for ODU’s seventh and final goal of the contest.
The Lady Monarch outshot the Pride, 28-9, and had the advantage in penalty corners, 12-3. De Turo had 13 saves for Hofstra while redshirt senior Marla Petriello had three while improving her season record to 3-1.
Old Dominion returns to action on Sunday when they face No. 8 Northeastern (6-1) at 1 p.m. The game will be played on Boston College’s home field in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Live stats will be for the contest.
