NORFOLK, Va. - Seven different Lady Monarchs scored on Saturday afternoon for the Blue team in a 7-0 victory in the annual Alumni/Intersquad Scrimmage at the Powhatan Sports Complex. Current players mixed with alumni to compete for two 35 minute halves and a 15-minute overtime period.
Junior Katy Fuhrman scored the first goal of the game about midway through the first half while junior Kati Nearhouse and senior Maartje van Rijswijk each added a goal for a 3-0 halftime lead. In the second half, redshirt sophomore Nicole Goff scored on a stellar pass from redshirt junior Danielle Clutter and senior Julie Hodge later scored off a deflection on a penalty corner to put the Blue squad in front, 5-0. Scoring on penalty corners, redshirt junior Christy Longacre and freshman Emily Harting rounded out the scoring.
In the overtime period starting with a clean slate, the alumni had a change to pull the upset early in the sudden death period with a pair of penatly corners but they were unable to convert and the Blue squad was able to take away the win when van Rijswijk put in the back of the cage in the six-on-six overtime format to claim the win.
Notable alumni in attendance included Honda Award winners Mimi Smith, Tiffany Snow-Huisman and Yogi Hightower while ODU Hall of Famer and All-American Dawn Hill was also on hand.
