LONDON - The United States women's field hockey team was thrashed by South Africa on Monday morning in London, 7-0, in their final match of pool play.
Tarryn Bright and Pietie Coetzee each scored twice for South Africa, who build a 4-0 lead on the United States at halftime. Dirkie Chamerlain, Jennifer Wilson and Lesle-Ann George also each scored in the contest as South Africa outshot the U.S., 27-6 and had 17 shots on goal to go along with 10 penalty corners.
Former ODU star and 2006 CAA Player of the Year Caroline Nichols played 52 minutes on Monday, her most in any of the United States' five games so far.
The loss puts the United States in last in group B and will await an opponent later in the week to determine the nine through 12th place final positions.
