NORFOLK, VA-- Junior outfielder Kenneth Belgrave (Norfolk, VA.) drove in three runs and ODU pounded out 13 hits and turned a triple play, but Longwood (23-19) rallied for a 9-7 victory over the Monarchs (18-29) Tuesday evening at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. Brandon Delk of Longwood knocked in four runs for the Lancers.
The Monarchs took a 6-1 lead into the sixth inning thanks to a groundout RBIin the second by Belgrave and a two-run homer with Brandon Shelton aboard in thefourth inning. It was Belgrave's second home in as many games (hit one in game two against W&M).
Sophomore thirdbaseman Brian Bashara (Norfolk, VA.) knocked in two runs for the Monarchs and junior firstbaseman Austin McGowan (Midlothian, VA.) doubled home freshman leftfielder Josh Eldridge (Lorton, VA.).
The Lancers scored two runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Brandon Delk. In theseventh Longwood took the lead with four runs on an RBI hit from Scott Burkett,asacrifice fly RBI by Matt Dickason and a two-run double by Brandon Delk which putLongwood ahead at 7-6.
The Lancers added two more runs in the eighth on a sacrifice fly RBI by Robby Newman and an RBI single by winning pitcher Matt Gwaltney.Reliever Aaron Myers came on in the seventh for Longwood to pick up the save.
ODU added a run in the ninth as sophomore Joey Burney singled home senior catcher Josh Tutwiler to cut the score to 9-7.
Senior shortstop Josh Wright led ODU with three hits, while senior Chris Baker, McGowan, and Shelton each had two hits on the night.
In the Longwood fifth inning Travis Biddix led off with a single, followed by a walk to Joey Varaksa. Scott Burkett hit a line drive to ODU shortstop Josh Wrightwho stepped on second to get Biddix and threw to firstbaseman McGowan to get Varaksa for the third out. That was the first ODU turned triple play since last yearat JMU on March 26,2011.
The Monarchs hit the road to Boston to take on Northeastern in a three-game CAAseries beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
