Patriots Take Two From ODU

FAIRFAX, VA--George Mason (27-14/13-8) swept a doubleheader from ODU SaturdayAfternoon. The Patriots won game one, 7-1 and 16-6 in game two. ODU freshman outfielder Joey Burney had three hits in game two.In game one -Patriots scored three runs in the first thanks to three back-to-back run scoring doubles. Nick Allen lead off the first with a single and scored on Dan Schafferman's double. Zack Helgeson and Blaise Fernandez then followed with RBI doubles for a 3-0 Mason lead.

Allen doubled home Jake Leonardo and Chris Cook in the fourth inning. Allen later scored on an RBI groundout by Schafferman. Hegleson followed with an RBI hit to plate Brig Tison for a 7-0 lead after four innings.

Josh Eldridge put ODU on the board in the seventh with an RBI single to plate senior Brent Frazier.

ODU threatened in the fifth with Brandon Shelton's lead off single and a walk to Mike Perez followed by a single to Josh Wright to load the bases but Ryan Pfaeffle pitched out of the jam.

Pfaeffle improved his record to 5-3, fanning four and scattering six hits with three walks in seven innings of work. Brandon Bartlett pitched two shutout innings of relief for the Patriots. Chris Cook led Mason with a perfect 4-for-4 day. Josh Eldridge led ODU with two hits.

In game two:ODU jumped out quick when Joey Burney fielders choice brought home Eldridge and Austin McGowan's double scored Burney. Senior second baseman Brandon Shelton followed with an RBI single to bring home McGowan for a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

George Mason came right back in the bottom of the second with eight runs.At one stretch eight straight Patriots reached base. Josh Leemhis doubled home two runs, then Chris Cook singled in two more to tie the game. Nick Allen's double brought home Cook to give the Patriots a 5-4 lead. In all, every Patriot starter knocked in a run and got at least one hit on the day.

In the ODU third Brandon Shelton singled home Tutwiler for ODU's fifth run. Joey Burnie also doubled home Eldridge in the seventh.

Joey Burney led ODU with three hits each, Eldridge also scored twice. Blaize Fernandez led Mason with four hits, while Brig Tison had three hits and three RBI.

Monarchs return to action next weekend when they host VCU in a three-game series atODU beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
