SOUTHPORT, NC-- ODU junior golfer Samantha Morrell (North Kingstown, RI.) fired a one under par 71 and is tied for first after 18 holes of the CAA Women's Golf Championships at the Reserve Club - St. James Plantation. Morrelland JMU's Nicole Sakamoto are tied for first one stroke ahead of ODU's Elizabeth Haycock (Birmingham, England) , Shabril Brewer of JMU and Sofia Hagsund of UNCW.
As a team, the Lady Monarchs finished at 299, five strokes behind tournament leader James Madison and one stroke ahead of UNCW. ODU senior Kristen Hagan (Charlotte, NC.) shot 77 and is tied for 15th. Morrell had four birdies on the day and 11 pars, while teammate Haycock birdied three holes with 12 pars.
Sakamoto led the field posting five birdies on the first day, including a pair of par 5 holes. Morrell paced the Lady Monarchs with four birdies on her first 18-holes.
The 54-hole championship is scheduled to continue on Saturday. The teams will start at split tees at 9:00 a.m. on the Reserve Club. James Madison, Old Dominion, UNCW, Xavier and Georgia State will tee-off on the first tee, while the rest of the teams and the Tigers' three individuals will tee-off on the 10th tee.
