NORFOLK, VA-- ODU Monarch freshman outfielder Josh Eldridge and sophomore designated hitter Ben Verlander each knocked in three runs to lead ODU to an 11-8 victory over crosstown rival Norfolk State Tuesday night before a crowd of 3,651 at Harbor Park. Ten different Monarchs scored atleast one run.
ODU exploded for six runs in the second inning highlighted by a two-run double by senior second baseman Brandon Shelton and a bases loaded double by Josh Eldridge. Third baseman Brent Frazier also knocked in a run in that inning.Crossing home plate in that inning were Wright, Tutwiler, McGowan, Shelton, Shawn Sizemore and Frazier.
Verlander tripled home Eldridge, Baker and Joey Burney doubled and later scored on Josh Wright's fielder's choice.
Eldridge not only led ODU with three RBI, but also had three hits on the night. Chris Baker and Brent Frazier also had two hits each, while McGowan scored twice.
ODU used eight pitchers with freshman starter Greg Tomchick picking up his first collegiate win of the season and Erick Baker his second save of the season.
The Spartans were led by Ross Cardwell with three hits and two RBI and Ryan Montgomery also had two RBI. Cameron Day and Mikey Bruno each had two hits for NSU.
McGowan still leads the Monarchs in hitting at .317, while Wright has scored 39runs thus far this season.
ODU returns to action Friday at 3:00 in Fairfax, Va. for a three-game CAA series at George Mason.
