Delaware Takes Series Opener, 8-6

NORFOLK, VA-- Chris Baker and Josh Tutwiler eachknocked in two runs for ODU, but Delaware held off the Monarchs in the CAA opener for an 8-6 victory Friday night at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

Trailing 5-0, ODU (3-9/0-1)rallied for four runs in the third inning on an RBI triple byShawn Sizemore scoring Brent Frazier, then Sizemore scored from third on Drew Coker's groundout. Senior firstbaseman Chris Baker homered to right to complete the scoring, and giving him a team best third homer of the season.

The Monarchs scored two more in the eighth inning on a two-run double by Josh Tutwiler which scored Coker and Josh Wright.

Delaware was led by Nick Ferdinand with two RBI and two hits along with ALex Mauriwith two hits and Brock Niggebrugge with three hits and an RBI.

Starting pitcher Eric Young picked up his third win of the season with relief helpfrom Jeff Murray and Stephen Richter. Young came into the game not allowing a run until the Monarchs scored four in the third. He then settled down and shut downODU with 13 in a row until the Monarchs scored in the eighth.

Josh Wright led ODU with two hits and two runs scored, while reliever Erick Baker pitched two shutout innings in the eighth and ninth, strikingout the sidein the ninth.

ODU and Delaware play game two of the League series Saturday at 3 p.m.
