NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 12 Old Dominion University coed sailing team placed sixth at the Aaron Szambecki Team Race on the Elizabeth River over the weekend.

ODU picked up six wins over opponents ranked in the top-15 in what was a stellar weekend of competition in Norfolk. The Monarchs twice defeated both No. 7 Stanford and No. 14 Navy while also earning victories over No. 3 Roger Williams and No. 9 St. Mary’s College (Md.) on the weekend.

Conditions were less than ideal for much of the weekend as rain and thunderstorms covered the region for much of Saturday and Sunday. Only half of round one action could be completed on Saturday with poor wind conditions and severe weather in the area. The rest of the round one along with round two were finished on Sunday while time ran out to allow for the final four to get underway.

Old Dominion went 3-1 on Saturday and held on to second place before a strong field caught up to them on Sunday. No. 6 College of Charleston won the event going 11-3 on the weekend followed by No. 10 Hobart & William Smith (10-4), No. 9 St. Mary’s College (9-5), No. 3 Roger Williams (8-6), No. 2 Georgetown (7-7), No. 12 Old Dominion (6-8), No. 14 Navy (3-11) and No. 7 Stanford (2-12).

Sailing for ODU was junior skipper Dillon Paiva along with sophomore crew Chloe Constants, sophomore skipper Scott Hoffmann and sophomore crew Julia Wiesner, sophomore skipper Brady Stagg and senior crew Emily Reich and senior skipper Gavin Rudolph and sophomore crew Jill Fattibene.

ODU stays at home in an off weekend coming up and will host their annual Parent’s Weekend at the ODU Sailing Center with a scrimmage for all parents, friends, family and fans to come and watch.
