WALLACE, NC - The ODU Lady Monarchs finished second at the UNCW Seahawk Classic, just six strokes behind tournament champion East Carolina. Lady Monarch junior Samantha Morrell (North Kingstown, RI.) took second individually just one stroke back.
East Carolina erased a three-stroke deficit in the final round to capture its second consecutive team championship and James Madison's Nicole Sakamoto won medalist honors. The Pirates set a tournament record with their 54-hole total of 292-288-286=866, smashing UNCW's total of 884 in 2007 by 18 strokes. Old Dominion finished second at 294-289-289=872, first and second round leader Longwood wound up third at 291-286-296=873.
Sakamoto, a senior fashioned a 70-70-72=212 for first place on the individual leaderboard, edging ODU's Samantha Morrell by just one stroke. A two time All-CAA selection, Morrell finished at 73-70-70=213 for second place and Longwood's Cameron Carter came in third at 73-66-75=214.
Elizabeth Haycock (birmingham, England), last week's CAA Golfer of the Week shot 73 to finish at 221 to tie for 12th along with Lady Monarch teammates Kimberley Bradbury (Derbyshire, England) and Gemma Fuster (Barcelona, Spain) . Fuster shot 70 in today's final round.
ODU returns to action April 2 and 3rd at the Hoya Invitational.
