NORFOLK, VA-- Joe Popielarczyk and Leif Sorenson combined for a four-hit shutout asUMass Defeated ODU Monday, 8-0 in the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The loss endedODU's five-game winning streak.

Popielarczyk pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two hits, five walks and four strikeouts and Sorenson pitched the final 3.2 innings allowing just two hits with five strikeouts.

The Monarchs stranded 10 runners, leaving two runs on base in the first, second, third and sixth innings.

Outfielder Drew Coker, shortstop Josh Wright, outfielder Chris Baker and pinchhitter Brent Frazier each had a hit for the Monarchs. Baker also walked twiceon the day.

Rob McLam, Tom Conley and Kyle Adie led UMass with two hits each. Nick Sanford knocked in two runs and Conley scored twice for the Minutemen.

Kyle Adie tripled home Adam Picard in the fourth inning, while Nick Sanford's groundout plated Conley in the second inning and his in the four-run eighth alsobrought home Conley.

The Monarchs return to action Tuesday at Longwood for a 6 p.m. contest, then onWednesday afternoon at Liberty beginning at 3 p.m. ODU returns home for a three-game CAA series with Hofsra beginning Friday night at 6 .p.m.That will be SalvationArmy Weekend as they sponsor a canned food drive to help "Knock Out Hunger." Bring a can for donation and you will receive free admission into the games.
