NORFOLK, VA-- Sophomore firstbaseman Joey Burney Gloucester, VA.) knocked in two runs and senior designated hitter Josh Tutwiler (Bridgewater, VA.) knocked in three to lead the Monarchs (7-10) to a 6-1 victory over UMass Saturday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The win was the Monarchs fourth straight.
ODU got on the board in the second inning when Tutwiler scored from third on aninfield hit by Brent Frazier (Fairfax Station, VA.).
The Monarchs added three runs in the fifth on a basesloaded hit by pitch to Tutwiler which brought home Joey Burney doubled home Chris Baker and Kenneth Belgrave (Norfolk, VA.).In the seventh Josh Tutwiler doubled to rightfield scoring Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA.) and Belgrave.
Burney led ODU hitters with two hits on the day,while Belgrave scored twice forODU.
Four Monarch pitchers; Greg Tomchick(Virginia Beach, VA.), Erick Baker (Marietta, PA.) , Dean Ali (Chesapeake, VA.) and Donald Engler (Glen Allen, VA.) held the Minutemen to five hits and one run along with 10 strikeouts, despite 10 walks. Junior righthander Erick Baker picked up the win in relief, fanning four in 2.1 innings of work.
UMass was led by Adam Picard with two hits. UMass scored its lone run in the fifthas Rich Graef scored from third on a bases loaded walk to Tom Conley.
The two teams will play game two of the series Sunday at 2 p.m.
