NORFOLK, VA-- Delaware righthander Corey Crispell and reliever Devon Pearson scattered four hits to lead Delaware over ODU, 6-2 Saturday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The Fightin' Blue Hens improve to 7-8 overall and 2-0 in the CAA, while ODU is 3-10 overall and 0-2 in the CAA.
Monarch starter Ben Tomchick fanned the first two batters he faced in the game, butin the second inning Delaware took a 3-0 lead with an RBI single by Chris Branigan, a double steal as Tyler Powell scored and Brock Niggebrugge's RBI doubleplated Branigan.
In the third Powell doubled and then scored on Branigan's single to make it 4-0.ODU rallied for two runs in the third. Josh Eldridge doubled, then scored from third on a wild pitch. Brent Frazier who reached on an error and would later score on an RBI single by Shawn Sizemore to cut the lead to 4-2.
Delaware added a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Ryan Hartley and in the ninth on an RBI single by Alex Maruri.
The Monarchs threatened in the fifth with two outs and the bases loaded, with Brent Frazier on third, Sizemore on second and Coker on first, but Crispell pitched out of the jam. In the eighth inning, Shawn Sizemore and Josh Wright were on second and third with one out, but reliever Devon Pearson pitched out of the jam.
Chris Branigan led UD with three hits and two RBI, while starting pitcher Corey Crispell pitched 7.1 innings allowing just four hits with two runs, one walk and five strikeouts. Pearson picked up his first save of the season.
ODU and Delaware play game three of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Bud MethenyBaseball Complex.
